 Re: bullrock - Chess Traps 1 [4:02]
nice vid. I dont think those qualify as legitimate traps since the variations aren't forced and the the moves have direct threats instead of the other player having to make a misstep to fall into the trap. for example the black queen threatens the knight directly which, if you don't do anything about it, can be taken. it also threatens Bh3 mate threats (which can be dealt with quite easily but still) also if you take the pawn I'm not sure that you are losing material since Qf3 and Be4 can defend it. your move is probably the best move in the position but it threatens f7 and c6 directly and both can't be defended properly so it's more of a totally crushing move than a trap. I mean, I can't find a move which would keep black in the game after Qf3 there..

Igor you make some good points. I didn't check to see if there was a refutation to Qf3. If there isn't one then I agree it isn't a trap at all. You have given me some insight into traps that I didn't have before and for that I thank you.
Edit:
After Qf3 black had Qf6 which gives white about a one pawn advantage only. So my trap was indeed a trap. However, I believe you are correct in that Nxc6 would have been an ok move to make and is not actually a trap.

true, after Qf6 you only win a pawn but you're already up a pawn, castled, better developed, without weaknesses and with pawn majorities on both sides of the board so that should be winning for you.
