 wetpaste's journal
I'm just going to post games here which I think are important for me to study. Most of them are probably going to be 5 minute blitz games. I'm hoping maybe some people who are stronger might give me tips from time to time. Anyways, I'm not a very good player. My FICS rating is really bad but its constantly going up, I just have to play a lot of games because I used to lose pretty much every game I played, usually because of time trouble. Now I am a lot better. on chess.com my blitz rating is around 1300 right now. Okay, well, the following game is atypical for me (im white playing a 1500 player): Every once in a while I get myself into these kinds of closed positions where it is very difficult for me to come up with a plan. I know I need to initiate some kind of kingside attack, but I'm just not sure how. Also, why do people play this opening against me so often? It is weird. Anyways, around move 30 I was in time trouble and had started playing really badly. So maybe my problem isn't really a problem except that I play openings badly sometimes. I usually don't end up in such a clusterf*** of a position. But was I playing badly. Just after a quick review, I think I would have been more comfortable after 6. dxc or 6. Bb5+, but for some reason I thought he wouldn't play 6. ...c4. For some reason I thought it was bad, but it ended up being pretty bad for me. I felt like I could probably attack his kingside pretty nicely but it took me so long just to figure out how to maneuver my pieces over there. Starting with move 13 I was trying to free up my kings pawns to push forward and reposition my knight and get my rook into action, but I now don't even know if this is the kind of situation to do it in. Anyways, if anyone could give a tip that would be great. This is the kind of area of chess that still confuses the hell out of me, mainly, strategy. P.S. can somebody explain to me how do put other details into the pgn file, apparently the generator didn't like my formatting.

 Re: wetpaste's journal
I played another game today, a longer one (15 min). I just can't think fast enough. I wanted to play the Ruy Lopez, but he decided to play something with 2... Bd6. My usual policy to moves like this is 3. d4, so thats what I did. It was actually a fun game but I got in these situations where I never found a very good move, so I just made one. I guess my problem is psychological. I will reject a bunch of moves and then sit and waste time, then see a move that is pretty good and just make it, but be unsure if it is the best, perhaps even worse than the ones I thought about longer. In this game I got checkmated with like 8 secs on the clock to about 4 minutes on my opponents clock. This game involved a lot of counting and I think my opponent could have gotten away with some sacrifices a couple of times, but I was also trying to make sure my threats would work out faster than his. It didn't really work out because I started to rush but, yeah, that kind of thing happens I guess. I know I'm still getting better. I wish I had found away to put the pressure on him even more in the critical position. I was just a little bit too awkward in my execution.

 Re: wetpaste's journal
Well, I have a new opening. I'm going to start playing the smith-morra against the sicilian. I was trying to find an interesting looking opening for white against the sicilian. I was playing the chameleon for a while, but its to theory-y for me, i also toyed around with some main line stuff for a while. I just want something simple and trappy, especially against people lower rated, which I play often(like the Be2 sicilian that kamus made a vid about).
this is in addition to the nimzo against d4 or c4, and I just play whatever against e4.
as white I aim for the ruy lopez as of late. I used to play lines like evans gambit and the fried liver but I didn't like it when people played annoying, boring moves in order to avoid it. I usually play d4 if they don't play 2. ... Nc6.
The one thing I don't know how to respond to is the kings gambit, it scares the hell out of me.

 Re: wetpaste's journal
I just realized i still never really know how to play against the french defense. I used to play the advance variation but I always got into a position where I was uncomfortable. I'm going to settle this as soon as I can, maybe I will play some kind quick exchange. I'm not really sure of the best way to play. I've gotta read something about it. maybe the Winawer advance rather than an immediate advance variation. Theres this crazy variation where white gets the g pawn but it gets all hairy, This is usually provoked by black, by not castling and playing Qc7. I think it is the "poisoned pawn" variation, at least im pretty sure thats what it is called.
Oh also i've decided to start playing the Spanish gambit if all goes to plan(a quick d4 by white, later I will show examples in my games). I got the idea from a book called "Spanish Gambits".

 Re: wetpaste's journal
A couple of nice correspondence games I played on gameknot.com:
The reason I like these games, even though I played them against seemingly less experienced players than me, was that I feel I made very good analysis and many times chose the best, or nearly the best move. The game was won very quickly and I took advantage of my opponents mistakes very quickly and accurately. When I first started playing chess I would play correspondence games and would never had made moves like this.

 Re: wetpaste's journal
Here is an awesome blitz game I just played this morning, (notice how many pieces are hanging at move 13, i was a little bit nervous about it):
It seems like many inexperienced players choose to play this against me. Some kind of immediate fiancetto of both bishops. I personally think the opening is really easy to play against. This is the kind of chess I like to play if I can, but it doesn't happen all that often. Lately I've been winning about 80 percent of my blitz games. I seem to bounce back and forth in skill and concentration in my games.

 Re: wetpaste's journal
Heres a game that I can thank kamus's video on the "Be2 sicilian" for. Even though he didn't fall for the immediate trap, i found a variation of the trap that worked out fine: .
I won this one quickly, I think my opponent was too shocked to play correctly after that. I played through the opening really fast. I think he was just surprised i beat him in the sicilian, playing a lower rated player such as myself.
