Re: Want to ask Dennis a question? (SUBMIT HERE)
mschosting: The nicest thing I can say in response is that personal questions (especially from strangers) are neither desired nor appropriate for this forum.
emstrem: Those old chess.fm shows are copyrighted material, but if you look on the internet you'll see that a thief has posted them somewhere. It might be a good idea for me to cover those games again for my ChessBase shows, so that they're properly available to a wider audience.
kinghunter: Good question, but it'll be a few weeks before I get to it. You're first on the list, though!

Re: Want to ask Dennis a question? (SUBMIT HERE)
Hi! I just wanted to know, how can i become a FM myself one day? I know, only with hard training, but do you have any generell advice for me? Is there anything more important, for example tactics, endgame...? Or do you think there are any books (for example My system or other books like that) that i "have to " read? Best wishes from germany

Re: Want to ask Dennis a question? (SUBMIT HERE)
Hi,
I hope I explain this correctly. My question is: How do you study raw game scores? I heard a lot of people say that their best improvement was to study raw game scores quickly, and get a lot in. IM Jeremy Silman for example said he did this and thinks there is no excuse for not being able to do it with the upsurge of the computer age. GM Tal was also known for doing similar on a regular basis even through his later years. So I was wondering if you could possibly explain visually how one "might" go about going through the games in this way? I know everyone is different and all, but I am kind of looking for a possible direction to look. Also related to this, I saw a web page where a master suggests memorizing around 20-50 high level games to boost your skill, do you think this is a viable way of improving? Is there a way of choosing the games you go through on both questions, if the second question is a positive answer.
Thank you,
Jesse

Re: Want to ask Dennis a question? (SUBMIT HERE)
I don't know if there will be a part 3, but here goes. Dennis, you often mention in your videos about a pawn not being the most important pawn in the world. My question is, in your opinion, what do you think was the most important pawn in the world then? Also a bit more serious question. I only play blitzgames on the internet for fun, (blitzrating up and down 1600). I find that I usually have trouble finding ideas about continuing my game after I developped my pieces to the regular places. Most of the time, let's say I play an Italian game with white, after castling and developping, I play a4, thinking it gains me space, but still not really knowing how I can get any profit from it. Sometimes it feels I'm trying to create something that isn't there (yet). Should I learn more about the idea behind an opening so I know how to continue my game better and also, if I play an opening I don't know (which happens often in blitz), how do I know what the most logical moves/ideas to improve my position are, trying to find a flaw in my opponents defence? And how bad/good is it to play a4? It usually just gets a5 from Black in return.

Re: Want to ask Dennis a question? (SUBMIT HERE)
I was wondering if you could take a look at the training game between the group of ten grandmasters, (Keres, Kotov, Symslov, Petrosian, Averbakh, Geller, Taimanov, Boleslavsky, Botvinnik, Tolush). It was a nimzo-indian where black refused a queen sacrifice and white lost on time. If black had accepted the sac, what was the continuation?

Re: Want to ask Dennis a question? (SUBMIT HERE)
Erad1288: I did a whole show on that game on the playchess.com server, and you can find it in the archives there if you're a member. The quick answer is that it's a perpetual check: 38...Kxc6(??) 39.Be4+ Kc5 40.Rd5+ Kc6 41.Rd1+ etc. Black has no legal way to escape the perpetual, while White has nothing better than to give it. Eliot: It's my intention to have a third show, fear not.

Re: Want to ask Dennis a question? (SUBMIT HERE)
I have a question: How can I get better at the endgame? I seem to be having a lot of trouble in endgames, drawing won endgames and losing drawn endgames. What should I do to remedy this problem? I seem to make far more mistakes in the endgame than any other stage and that is where most of my loses come from. Unfortunately most of my recent recorded games haven't made it to the endgame, so I don't have much to look at. For example, here is one where I was up a pawn, then had what looked like a drawn position, then lost: Hidden Text Below - [Show it] - [Hide it Again] [Event "Online Chess"] [Site "Chess.com"] [Date "2008.10.14"] [Round "1"] [White "Me"] [Black "Black"] [Result "0-1"] [WhiteElo "1641"] [BlackElo "1626"] [TimeControl "1 in 3 days"]

Re: Want to ask Dennis a question? (SUBMIT HERE)
Hi Dennis, thanks for answering all of these questions. I have a question on the ever-difficult subject of chess etiquette.
In my games (60 minute and up), I often gain a fairly significant advantage on the clock. It's not uncommon for me to have 20-30 minutes left when my opponent is down to 2-3 minutes. An opponent of mine recently complained after his timer ran out that I 'only won because of the clock' and that he'd played better, neither argument impressed me. He thought it was unsportly of me to flag him while he had the better position, which he did have. But it looked quite defendable and the position was complicated enough for him to mess up in time trouble, not to mention the fact there was no increment. Which is why I played on, I pushed him back a little and gained a bit of an advantage before his flag fell.
My question, if there's no clear way to win or draw for either side, is this proper? If it is, where exactly should I draw the line, how much time?

Re: Want to ask Dennis a question? (SUBMIT HERE)
hey dennis, i am an average/intermediate player with potential. i have not studied openings very deeply. i feel i should just be working on middle game and endgame. i want to be able to just play a good opening that i dont have to know much theory behind, or one that isnt very deep i should say, an opening that i can play against black or white, no matter what they move...basically what i do currently was recommended in a video i saw, where for white i usually play
1.e4 2.Bc4 3.Nf3 4.0-0 and swing my night usually to g3, bring my dark swuare bishop out somewhere, light square bishop usually comes to b3 or c2.
or
1.d4 2.Nf3 3. Bf4 or Bf5, and have pawns on c3 and f3, with my N on d2, lots of times ill castle long after ...Nh5 Bg3 Nxg3. maybe im giving too much info, but this is what ive been doing as of late. thanks man
ps. this site rocks, and has inspired me to play more, thanks !

Re: Want to ask Dennis a question? (SUBMIT HERE)
Hello,
A big fan of your videos on here, I find them an interesting contrast to Coehlo's in that yours tend to be more tactically based, and his more positionally based. My question is as follows:
I arrived at the following position in a game the other day, and while thinking about how to proceed from this position, unfortunately, for the first time in ages I might add, the wifi dropped and I disconnected thus losing the game (a rarity for me I swear!). At any rate, I was down a pawn, but I felt that my bishops were well placed. First, how differently would the game have proceeded potentially had I not blundered with Qc2? and instead played Qb3 (my 2nd candidate move) earlier in the game? And also, how could I proceed from this position with attacking blacks queen pawns while not losing my own?
Thanks!
PS I noticed people like to mention the rating numbers. I am white (1554) vs black (1967), game played on FICS.

Re: Want to ask Dennis a question? (SUBMIT HERE)
Mr. Monokroussos,
Hi, thanks a lot for answering my last question! This time I would like to ask something about the Berlin Defence.
I saw this video of yours, "The Exciting Berlin", a couple months ago. (By the way, it was a really awesome video and the Berlin has become my main defense against the Ruy Lopez ever since!) In it, you analyzed a game in which the black king went to the queenside and talked a lot about black's related strategies on that side of the board. Can you discuss in detail what would happen if his king were to go to the kingside, such as differences in general strategies and what kinds of things he needs to watch out for? And can you (this is more of a request than a question) perhaps consider making a video some time in the future analyzing a game in which black's king goes to the kingside, if you have time? I feel this would be quite useful since a lot of times white plays Rd1+ on move 9, after which it seems like black's king would be forced to remain on the kingside. Thank you very much!
Michael

Hi Dennis.
How many openings do you reccemend learning?
Is it better to have a general understanding of all the openings? Or just 1 or 2 openings that you know very well?
Thanks
