hi Dennis

thanks for the game.

I loved the the background story about Korchnoi and hope you will do it again some time. Sfarmer does the same,,, very interesting I think

Wiki says he was born March 23, 1931.

Hold on. So Korchnoi sees women as cows? Oh that old badger, such an ironically funny guy.

(I share your enthusiasm for the game, not for the player.)

Wikipedia is only as good as the last person to edit it, but in this case, yeah. I even did a quick few searches for anywhere online where it states a July birthdate for him and I couldn't find anything.

Haha...when I first discovered chess this is one of the first vids I saw on YouTube...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxeiGipoFSE

I always remember thinking what a moody git...and now a couple of years later I search for Korchnoi and this video comes up again. :D I had no idea who he was before. Great player but bit of an attitude problem ;)

Good game, thanks.

By the way, the title Korchnoi vs the kid... ahem... that really doesn't narrow down his opponents very much ;) At 53 I am a 'kid' to him.

You are right about Viktor having a good sense of humor, I have seen many off-hand video clips and he delivers his humor in a very dead-pan fashion which really brings a big laugh. He's a good man, and to imagine the horrors he must have lived through as a boy. He has my respect and admiration.

I love Korchnoi, one of my favorite chess stories comes from one of his books..(My Best Games, Vol. 1)
"1963, tournament in Havana. Some participants, including Tal and Korchnoi, give simuls. Among Korchnoi's opponents there is Che Guevara. An official approaches Korchnoi, telling him: "Che Guevara loves chess passionately, but he is a rather weak player. He would be extremely happy to draw his game against you." Korchnoi nods understandingly. Later in the hotel, Tal asks him how it went. "I won them all." - "Against Che Guevara, too?" - "Yes, he doesn't have the faintest idea what to do against the Catalan."" XD

As always, a great video, thanks Dennis!

Korchnoi, one of the all time greats and my favourite player. Many thanks for an enjoyable game and a reminder that there is still some play yet to come from Viktor.

Hi Dennis - thx for commenting this game - I followed it live on chessbomb - after g4 most of the commentators where thinking, that Korchnoi is moreless lost - I thought - well - a risky move but Korchnoi is not known for playing passive - and he knows perfectly well what he is doing. I think Caruana was completely underestimating him and played to careless - maybe a good lesson for Caruana

there was never real time trouble for any of the players in this game.

Korchnoi scores against:

Fischer +3-3 =4
Spassky +25 -18 =39
Tal +13 - 6 = 29
Karpov + 17 - 35 = 69
Kasparov + 1 - 18 = 28

At London classics 2011 he scored in the simuls with +20, =4, -1

respect to this old fighter - as you say in the vid - he is really inspiring

Hey Dennis, I forgot to mention earlier that Viktor may not be big on using computers (maybe that is changing these days, who knows for sure), yet he played ...g5, which, as you mentioned, is a good move. I have noticed when going over old games with a strong engine that moves like g3g4 or ...g7g5 are the computer's choice in positions where a human would normally not play such a move in fear of weakening the castled position. I have also noticed in the play of strong players today who *do* use computers regularly the will spot these moves nowadays.

I was wondering if you noticed this as well. Also, have you noticed other areas where computer engines 'styles' have crept into master practice? Another thought (albeit from older engines) is that they did not give enough weight to minority attacking positions and used to always give the side with the majority the slight edge - I haven't tested these positions with Rybka yet, but I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on the subject.

excellent - I raid used book stores here in Minneapolis and managed to get volumes 1 and 2 of "My Life For Chess" a while back but haven't gotten a change to start them yet - - and snippets I've seen of the Chessbase videos look entertaining too -
