Nice example. Shows that you have to play endgames based on calculation, not on general principles.
An outside passed pawn isn't always an advantage. Sometimes it loses!

how about playing the knight to b4, then trading pawns and playing knight to d5?

i guess ...fxg would be kinda bad. The white king can't seem to get over in time to help.
