Given how often "the tactic" appears in training and in the real world, it makes me want to try the French. I have played the Caro-Kann because it is supposed to be the French minus the bad bishop, but to my untrained eye the French looks pretty dang solid, bad bishop or no!

I couldn't deal with the French - positions didn't seem to suit my nature but Nigel Short and Viktor Korchnoi (et al) used it for years so how bad could it be? OTOH, though I'm a lowly club player, my record against the French is ridiculously high- not due to my "strength" I'm sure, but more due to the fact that lower rated players have difficulty dealing with cramped positions and often defend poorly against K-side attacks.

You noticed I always call it that, huh? :) Maybe we should come up with a name for it...
