Re: Robofriven - vs Armis 25 5 Alekhine\'s Defense [9:02]
Couple things I should mention that I seemed to forget in the video. Firstly, sorry about the audio not sinking up, I've always had problems with that on here, hence the short game.
Firstly I wanted to talk about the position before the move a3. It looked like this:

I think this was a slightly better position for White. Not just because Fritz gave it a +=.20, because I thought this before the silicon beast told me so. And here's why.
Firstly, space. White is kicking Black's butt at space! The center and the Queenside are under White's control with Black not really having any way of gaining any territory because his pawns are all blocked by the knights. The only square that Black really controls is b4 and a5 and the square e5 is rather up for grabs at the moment.
Blacks knight on b6 has moved a LOT to get to where it's at, and it's not really all that great of a square where the White knights on f3 and c3 are rather well placed effecting the center which is controlled by White's good pawns on c4 and d4.
The Bishop on h5 really isn't doing a whole lot anymore since the pin was broken, though I do now see that h3 was a rather useless move it really didn't cost me anything except the pawn on h3 was harder to defend than it would have been on h2 after the bad gxf3 move, but that's gxf3's fault more than h3's.
And near the end, Kh2 wouldn't have helped at all because Nxf4 still can't be stopped.
Anyway, hope you all enjoyed the video, any and all feedback is quite encouraged. Thanks!

{This is the first standard game I've ever played against Armis. It's also the
first time I've seen Alekhine's defense in months. I made a couple of slight
opening inaccuracies but coming out of the opening I think I had a slightly
better position. Then I overlooked the fact that a pawn wasn't inadvertantly
defended and it all fell down hill from there. I'm not making excuses, Armis
just outplayed me, but I think there are some interesting points to be made in
this game.} 1. e4 Nf6 2. e5 Nd5 3. c4 Nb6 4. Nf3 {The most common line of this
is 4. d4 d6 followed by either f4 or exd6. I was about to play d4 but then
thought that I could just play f3 first and it would transpose into that line,
which it pretty much does anyway. But I think this was a slight inaccuracy as
it opens up all sorts of nasty things that Black can do.} (4. d4 d6 {
With either f4 or exd6 th emost likely next moves.}) 4... d6 {I think that the
opening book for this move is to just pin the knight right away though it all
works out the same.} 5. d4 Bg4 6. exd6 exd6 7. Be2 Be7 {
SAme as Juarez - Alvarez Castille Match} 8. h3 Bh5 9. O-O O-O 10. Nc3 Nc6 {
Originally I thought that the best move here was Bxf3 and was confused when
that wasn't even on Fritz's top 10! But I've figured out why, after Bxf3 Bxf3
Nxc4 (the idea behind Bxf3) White has Bxb7!! winning the rook.} (10... Bxf3 11.
Bxf3 Nxc4 12. Bxb7 {When Black loses the rook.}) 11. a3 $2 {Here was my
reasoning for this move. of the imbalances in the game, I had only 1 in my
favor, I had more space in the center and on the Queenside. A central push
seems very difficult to achieve here, BUT a queenside push is quite simple, so
I started playing for that. Though I forgot that the pawn on c4 was no longer
protected by the Queen on d1 through a Qa4+ and hasn't been for some time and
thus 11... Bxf3 would require gxf3 to keep from losing material weakening the
Kingside.} Bxf3 ({Fritz 5.32:} 11... Bxf3 12. Bxf3 Nxc4 13. Bxc6 bxc6 14. Qa4
Nb6 15. Qxc6 d5 16. Bf4 {[%eval 12,10]}) 12. gxf3 $2 {At the time I thought
that this was the only way to hold the pawn. But the machine has taught me
better and after Bxf3 Nxc4 13. Bxc6 bxc6 14. Qa4! material is even again
because Black cannot defend both the pawn on c6 and the Knight on c4. During
the game I was torn between ruining by Kingside and losing the c pawn and
thought that I probably should have taken with the Bishop just because it
would keep my King safe, it turns out I was right, but for tactical reasons I
couldn't see.} Bf6 13. d5 {Better is Be3 holding the pawn and keeping the
mobile center which should be used to push on the Queenside not to no end in
the center.} Ne5 14. f4 Ng6 15. Kh1 {Better is Kh2?} Bxc3 16. bxc3 Qh4 17. Bg4
