 Homemade puzzles [1]: Constrictor
White to play and win EDIT: diagram corrected with the final form of the puzzle!! (black pawn to a6 instead of a7) As usual, your comments are welcome and the following questions are open: Is it tough? Is it enjoyable? Small hint for opening the appetite for this puzzle: Do not be afraid to use a computer as tactics guidance in finding the solution: the puzzle is intended to be tough for computers! Hidden Text Below - [Show it] - [Hide it Again] My Fritz 11 (badly) mis-evaluates the position until ~4/5 of the solution

 Re: Constrictor [my first study]
What is wrong with the puzzle, to start with? Too many pieces? Too unnatural position? Is the puzzle so ugly that it scares off everyone?

 Re: Constrictor [my first study]
right off the bat Qg7+ and Qxd3 pose problems for white. white's only trump is the e-pawn. intuitively i would not think there is a clear win here, white's pieces are discombobulated and king is exposed. if there is a win, it seems it would start with e5-e6. 1.e6 Qg7, 2.Kf3 Qxh6, 3.Nd4 c5 4.e7+ Ke8 5.Nf5 1.e6 Qxd3 2.Nd4 and now black has too much choice. i'm at work and can't use a board or spend any more time on this. looks difficult anyway!

 Re: Constrictor [my first study]
Do not be afraid to use a computer as tactics guidance in finding the solution: the puzzle is intended to be tough for computers! [I continue testing variations besides the main line = intended solution, and so far all lead to a clear win for black...] Indeed, Qg7+ and Qxd3 are the main moves for black. White has to coordinate his pieces (or what's left of them after black's second move), and he needs to do this quickly 1.e6 Qxd3 2.Nd4 Qd2+ {-+} wins the rook and the game Hint: Hidden Text Below - [Show it] - [Hide it Again] Although it is indispensable for White's win, the e-pawn will not move anywhere in the foreseeable future. Just dance around it

 Re: Constrictor [my first study]
Too hard. Just can't see any ideas....and the few that came to mind took like 15 seconds to find some faults with

 Re: Constrictor [my first study]
OK, then I'll post the main line with few comments: Hidden Text Below - [Show it] - [Hide it Again] 1. Nd4 {giving up the rook} 1... Qg7+ {accepting the rook, otherwise 2knights+rook win} 2. Kh3 {protects the h-pawn} 2...Qxh6 3. Nf4 {finally, a fortress in in sight; bQ cannot move without being captured either directly of after Ne6+} 3...Kd7 4. Nde6 completing the fortress 4...c6 (4...Qxe6 5.Nxe6 Kxe6 6. Kg4 Kxe5 7.Kg5 +-) 5. h5 {tightening the fortress and freeing wK for action on the other side of the board} {Hereafter, there are many variations, but I found a win in all, basically through zugzwang -- if my analysis is correct} 5...a6 6. Kg4 Kc8 7. Kf3 Kb8 8. Ke4 Kb7 9. Kd4 Ka7 10. c4 Kb7 11. b4 Kc8 12. a5 12... Kb7 (b5 13. Kc5 bxc4 14. Kxc4 Kd7 15. Kc5 +-) 13 b5 bxa5 14. bxc6+ Kxc6 15. Kc3 a4 16. Kb4 a3 17. Kxa3 Kb6 18. Kb4 Kb6 19. c5+ Kc6 20. Ka4 Kb7 21. Ka5 Ka7 22. c6 +-
Can you find something wrong with it?

 Re: Constrictor [my first study]
Yeah it seems good. I was trying to find similar ideas but couldn't come up with it.

 Re: Constrictor [my first study]
Unfortunately, there is one line whre black barely holds on by just one(!) tempo, as found hereTo correct the puzzle, the a7 pawn need to be moved (e.g. to a6 or a5), which kills a whole tree of variations, but hopefully the study remains enjoyable. The Study in its new form has been the subject of a small article [in German]: http://glareanverlag.wordpress.com/2009 ... n_neghina/
