Post Homemade puzzles [1]: Constrictor
White to play and win

Chess board: 3k4/2pq3p/pp5R/4P3/P6P/2PN4/1PN3K1/8 w - - 0 1
EDIT: diagram corrected with the final form of the puzzle!! (black pawn to a6 instead of a7)

As usual, your comments are welcome and the following questions are open:

Is it tough?
Is it enjoyable?

Small hint for opening the appetite for this puzzle:

Do not be afraid to use a computer as tactics guidance in finding the solution: the puzzle is intended to be tough for computers!

Post Re: Constrictor [my first study]
:( :(

What is wrong with the puzzle, to start with? Too many pieces? Too unnatural position? Is the puzzle so ugly that it scares off everyone?

right off the bat Qg7+ and Qxd3 pose problems for white. white's only trump is the e-pawn. intuitively i would not think there is a clear win here, white's pieces are discombobulated and king is exposed.

if there is a win, it seems it would start with e5-e6.

1.e6 Qg7, 2.Kf3 Qxh6, 3.Nd4 c5 4.e7+ Ke8 5.Nf5

1.e6 Qxd3 2.Nd4 and now black has too much choice. i'm at work and can't use a board or spend any more time on this.

looks difficult anyway! :eye:

Do not be afraid to use a computer as tactics guidance in finding the solution: the puzzle is intended to be tough for computers! [I continue testing variations besides the main line = intended solution, and so far all lead to a clear win for black...]

Indeed, Qg7+ and Qxd3 are the main moves for black. White has to coordinate his pieces (or what's left of them after black's second move), and he needs to do this quickly :)

1.e6 Qxd3 2.Nd4 Qd2+ {-+} wins the rook and the game

Too hard. Just can't see any ideas....and the few that came to mind took like 15 seconds to find some faults with :-(

Can you find something wrong with it?

Unfortunately, there is one line whre black barely holds on by just one(!) tempo, as found here

To correct the puzzle, the a7 pawn need to be moved (e.g. to a6 or a5), which kills a whole tree of variations, but hopefully the study remains enjoyable.

The Study in its new form has been the subject of a small article [in German]: http://glareanverlag.wordpress.com/2009 ... n_neghina/
