You mentioned throughout the video that white should be playing a3, b4 and c5 against this setup, but what does this really accomplish? Is it to plant a piece on d6? even then I'm not so sure how great white's position is because black could land a piece on d4, and attack the piece on d6

You're right, although the idea for white is to reduce blacks activity to a minimun, there are plenty of model games that are disastreous for black in this opening, for instance search for Piket - Smirin, dont remember the year, but it's in the Na6 line, and also an important game wich I mention is Khalifman - Matamoros, of course there are plenty of improvements for black, but beware of the danger, by the way a second part of this video is coming up.
