Post Re: kamus - W vs Fuzion Rnd 5, post-game analysis [10:33]
The live commentary video got messed up and had no sound :? so all my scintillating comments, insightful analysis (with guest appearances from my two chess-playing girls!), swearing and panicky reactions are lost in the ether. I recorded this immediately after the game but since I thought my earlier comments had been recorded, the comments here are pretty perfunctory.

I played a variation of the Wing Gambit known as the Portsmouth Gambit, which I think is superior to the normal Wing Gambit and got a good position with material equality and better development as well as a considerable time edge. My first mistake was taking on e6 when a3! instead led to a promising position. A few more insipid moves and we got to an equal-ish position. In the endgame, I was apparently better and even winning at one point but we were both short of time and it petered out to a draw due to inaccurate play on my part . Fuzion did a nice job of holding the draw a pawn down in mutual time pressure. All in all, I'm OK with this game- Fuzion is higher rated, the opening went well, I didn't make any losing blunders (though I missed an endgame win-time to hit the R+P ending books!) and Black was never better than equal according to Rybka. Considering my miserable play in Kamus-Moejoe and Detroitman-Kamus,at least I didn't uncork any outright stinkers like in those games and for me, that's something of a victory!

Congrats to Fuzion on a well-fought and interesting game!

I watched the game live. I was almost yelling at you through the computer screen when you didn't take the f6 pawn. Oh well, that's how it goes sometimes. Next time...

And also thanks for showing us the Portsmouth Gambit. I play the Sicilian with black and I'd rather the first time I see it is in a video on CV.tv and not in an over-the-board tournament game or something. *shudder*

Thanks for the support- I couldn't quite hear your yelling at that point- next time shout louder! :) I did make up for it by yelling a lot at myself after the game.

I actually responded to you in the the other thread where I gave a few remarks on the opening. Thanks for watching and commenting. :)

Happens to all of us Kamus. I saw Rxf6 right away, but when you put the pressure on by playing the actual game, things are different.

Craig Jones had a good comment on this. He stopped by my board to say 'Hi' and I asked him why he wasn't playing, to which he responded "When I am walking around I see everything. When I sit down to play I seem to cut off the circulation of blood to my brain!" We chess players just need to relocate our brains so we are not sitting on them all the time!

Neat opening. I've never seen that one played before, I'll have to take a look at it, very interesting stuff - very unorthodox from the Sicilian Defender's POV.

Seems to me you get good positions with your wild gambit lines, but then you're playing to many slow moves, not the most forcing ones...
Here, I didn't like you taking back the pawn so early and giving away your lead in development.

Did you have a look on 10 c5? Looks very interesting to me. My machine liked it only after some minutes of calculation, but the idea is quite logical.
You free your Bf1 to go to b5, maybe in conjunction with c5-c6 and you can prevent black from developing his pieces by answering e6 with d6 when black is completely cramped.

I think your comments regarding my play are spot-on. All I have to do is incorporate them, which seems to be the tough part!

Didn't consider 10.c5 at all, though apparently it was the first thing Pobble saw when he looked at the position- obviously, I need to develop my positional acumen as well. Thanks for watching and commenting. :)

Very interesting game and opening, thanks for showing it, kamus. Would have loved to see the live commentary, as I quite enjoy those.

When you took on e6 you mentioned that you wanted to open the position. Now, you can argue that it is more open, since more lines are now accessible, etc., but I would say that 1. you give the opponent a bit of space that he didn't have before and more importantly 2. it's not an openness that you can exploit (sort of like a weak d6 pawn in the Sicilian that is only weak in theory).

Annoying to miss stuff like Rxf6. It's like a blind spot on the board while playing, but afterwards you see it right away. It's a psychological problem that I'm going to try and combat in the near future, as well.

Thanks Fox- somewhat comforting to know others suffer from a similar affliction. Yes, I did talk myself into d5xe6- I saw the d6 possibility but rejected it (even though it's thematic in another line of the Portsmouth Gambit) because of an amorphous, irrational, undefined fear based on absolutely no calculation whatsoever but instead by the heebie-jeebies of the moment that I'm now at pains to explain. The second I played it, I knew I had made a mistake.

I've been asked to write an article for the Unorthodox Openings Newsletter- I've done a quite a lot of research on the opening and have developed some original analysis. I think the opening is quite good. I'll share it with interested parties here when it's finished.

Thanks for the comments, as always. :)

@ kamus:
I am very interested in your game, because I am playing the Portsmouth Gambit for some decades now in OTB and corr chess. Could you post the moves here? I also would like to read your article for the newsletter. Maybe we could share some analysis...
