I think this will be an interesting test for you, to see if your intuition (moving faster will mean you can't calculate everything out) is in sync with your regular solitaire studies. I think you will do just as well, maybe even a bit better.

I've done a few solitaire at this speed (actually 15 min for the whole session, just for fun as I don't have a whole lot of time to dedicate to the game) and so far am around 58%. I just wish I knew of an easy way to make flash cards of some of the positions for later study - I give the position a 'Special Medal' but would really like to make a flashcard. Maybe you can show how you do it in one of your vids.

BTW there is an annoying 2-3 second lag towards on the back 9 on some of your videos whereas others are fine. This is okay for the main game part, but it sucks when you are popping through your post game analysis as you tend to go through some of those lines rather quickly and your analysis is over for some times before the video image catches up. I can follow you just fine, but others might be having some problems.

Weird....dunno how to deal with that lag, haven't heard of it for a bit.

I make my flash cards on my phone, basically zero chance to explain how to do it in an internet video where you can't see my phone :) Download flashcards deluxe though and play around with it until you figure it out :)

Do you think you will obtain better scores with different players? If you are training using players with a significantly different style it could cause variance on your scores.
You have a better idea of how this may effect you but I would suggest using games from players who have a similar style to you.

Still love the videos and think the idea is very cool

Yeah, the lag that shows up halfway through this video made the post-mortem really tough for me. It's not just a second, it's like five, so when you are speeding through stuff it's really hard to follow.

Steve, I have thousands of chess position flashcards (largely openings, also positions from some books like the Manual of Chess Combinations and Mastering Chess Strategy). I use the spaced repetition program Mnemosyne. I talk about it here and here.

nice video, curtains. i think i noticed at the end that you tabulated the results from your excel spreadsheet by hand. if you're interested, this would automate those calculations and potentially spare you some time:

=EXACT(A1,B1) < - goes in cell c1.

=COUNTIF(C:C,TRUE) < - goes in cell d1. this will tell you the # of moves you guessed correctly.

=100*D1/COUNTA(A:A) < - goes in cell d2. this will give you the % of total moves you got right.

once your game is done, holding ctrl and dragging down from the bottom right of c1 to the row of the last move will generate the statistics you want to know in cells d1 and d2. it would be helpful to save these formulas as a template and open that template instead of a standard workbook when you'd like to play and score a solitaire game.

looking forward to forward to your future videos, you're the best

Thats intense, thanks for the info although not sure what you mean still, esp since all I do is bold the ones I get right :) Anyway as you can see in some of my future videos, I focus more on houdini evals now than whether I got the move right or wrong.

ah, then i suppose you won't find this too useful. i'll explain in more detail what i meant anyway.

my idea was to make a template with the three formulas i gave and save it. you would then open this template when you wanted to play a solitaire game. you would enter your moves in exactly the same fashion you currently do, except that you would not need to pay mind to bolding the ones which were correct. at the end of the game, you would have a sheet that looks like this:

Image

dragging from c1 down to the row where you put your last move in makes things look like this

Image

d1 has the amount of moves that match and d2 has the % of moves you got correct. this would save the hassle of manually counting how many bolded rows there are and counting the number of moves you guessed total.

at any rate, for the purpose of evaluating the merit of your chess moves, i think measuring them vs what houdini says makes a lot more sense than this metric. sounds like you've got everything under control, but i couldn't resist a chance to potentially help someone who's given me hundreds of hours of entertainment =)

One way you could help is to take a look at my google doc for my Scramble with Friends league, and tell me if there's any easy way to automatically sort the players on the standings page by their percentage. They would have to be sorted within their group as well. Here's the link for that:
