totally agree with your thoughts about 5 minutes, I hate losing in the time scramble. Just lost a game from a totally drawn phillidor position because I didn't move my rook faster than he moved his king back and forth. Total Joke

Very funny game :) Just goes to show, you should never give up...A game isn't won until it's won :) Great fighting spirit and tricky play.

This is what's so brutal about chess sometimes. Your position can be completely winning, but still if you don't find the right move to finish it all that hard work and good play is wasted.

Hey Greg, I'm curious why you now prefer the Grunfeld if you don't mind sharing. After all, the Nimzo/Bogo combo should be pretty reliable. Does the Grunfeld's greater activity offer better winning chances or do you think White retains a slight edge longer in the others?

BTW: I've played everything from 1 0 to 30 0+ online. Most of my games used to be 3 or 5 minutes for years. Eventually, I realized that 3 0 was only useful for helping me sharpen 1-2 move tactics. Everything else was too instinctual to promote learning. In fact, it was more reinforcing some bad habits through repetition and because my opponents missed moves much more often than in 5 0.

Later, I realized that while 5 0 was beneficial, it was still not as helpful as 10 0 because there was too much reliance on instinct and too little time for any real calculation. For the last months, I've stuck to 10 0 and I just managed to win a local tournament with 5/6 and a 2000 performance. I think a lot of it is switching to 10 0 because it requires a more balanced combination of time management, positional play and tactical acumen while still allowing me to get many games in.

Hi exigentsky. Of course 10 0 is nice, but unfeasible for me since there are no good players playing it. Grunfeld is just more my style, fun open positions. Nimzo/Bogo is good too though, but I think the Grunfeld just suits me a little better, however it does require some work, moreso than the Nimzo/Bogo

I agree on the 5+1 pool. In fact, I made a similar suggestion a while back. Would be neat if they listen.

5+1 pool is interesting, but to be honest I would get the most enjoyment from 15 15 or something like that. Just a shame nobody is playing it.

Your last two videos really drive home the saying, "The best offense is a good defense."

I think increments are the worst thing that ever happened to chess because it limits creativity . Increments have only been around since the 1990's straight time would eliminate draws. I know you remember analog clocks. I feel increments are for people who can not get to job done . If you have increments there is no need for or fear of time trouble.
