I more that once ended up in the same situation. I was playing the opening, I thought I looked at just yesterday. The problem was that I wasn't yet in CHESS mode, I wasn't playing on my own, I was just playing the moves I remember looking at . The problem though is that my opponent chose an entirely different approch and I ended up in a ridiculous position where my moves just didn't make sense

Thanks for a valuable reminder. I did something similarly brain dead in a game at the local chess park last Saturday where I got confused as Black between two different anit-Sicillian lines instead of just thinking about it for 30-60 seconds (it wasn't a timed game) and making the obvious good move based on the position on the board.

If you're black and it goes 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. c3, you don't have to be Kasparov to play 3... d5 instead of what I actually did...

Fortunately, someone at the next table upwind started smoking five moves later and my opponent, who it turned out was deathly allergic to cigarette smoke, begged me for a draw ("Sure, nice game!" I said...) before running off to somewhere with cleaner air.

I have the same problem... I try to do something that I can't really remember ;C
