I agree with you that #57 is one to know in your "Practical Chess Ending" knowledge. But so is the next one, #58. At first it may seem to be a typical chess problem but endgames with a bishop vs pawns or another bishop pose certain problems where triangulation is a necessity and often there is only one way to do it. As we saw in a recent presentation by Curtains, these can be tricky. But knowing that there are possible winning lines in such positions should send up a red flag to the players to slow down and tread carefully in the "Bishop Zone".

Looking forward to your explanation on #58 as I believe this should be in a players knowledge base. It's got more than it's share of free drinks at the local watering hole.

Looks like I'll have to break out the more esoteric problems/studies to give you guys something meaty to solve- don't worry, I have hundreds in my collection. :) I didn't manage to solve #58-couldn't see the surprising winning idea- it's a good one! BTW, thanks, as always for the comments, Steve- just knowing that you, Fox, Zibbit and a few others regularly watch the series keeps me going!

This one is nice. It's the same theme almost as Reti's pawn endgame study. #58 is a beauty, seen it before :-)

Seeing #58 for the first time, I figured it out pretty quickly. Sure, it's not a hard puzzle, since White has all the time in the world to find the winning move order, but still, I think, an instructive one.

Also, there's something very logical and methodical about it that I can appreciate - e.g. in the starting position there's only one obvious way to play for a win, and after that it's a matter of figuring out the right scenario to

Hidden Text Below - [Show it] - [Hide it Again]

Again, there's a certain leeway for White to get the timing right.

My pleasure! This is one of the best series I've seen on this site.
