Great presentation- gives a good sense of the tournament. I liked the game too- scrappy but it's nice how this declined variation turned into a Morra style tactical slugfest anyway. I trust that you have Esserman's book- I'm guessing that there good ideas in there for the declined lines. In future it would be nice to know your opponent's rating. Thanks for sharing these- looking forward to subsequent games.

Actually I don't think there are any declined lines in his book. I made that one up as I went along. I did go through the book as a guide and used Chess Position Trainer and Houdini on a speedy quad core and found quite a few novelties and improvements on his work. Did the same for the Evans Gambit. Both were hearty projects to undertake, but they are done now (except for inputting some declined lines).

Getting back into tourney play and you gotta start somewhere, so I figure Go Big or Go Home!

I had another Morra declined in Rd 3.

After I write the article for NM Desert Knight mag I will be posting more videos.

Au contraire, Esserman covers all the declined variations. Not that it would have helped in this game since he (in my opinion, rightly) recommends 5. Nf3 instead of the immediate recapture on d4.

Thanks for the video. I gotta be honest, I find it a bit hard to follow as your evaluations and calculations are much quicker than mine.

@Fox, I didn't know that, will look again... if I can find the book which is hiding around here somewhere!

@Sarciness, I agree, I had to move fast, have these seven to annotate, the Scorpions (two weeks) and an article that is past due for the New Mexico Desert Knight.

Almost getting sick of chess...

Not!

Just FYI, Mike Hentges was rated 1865 at the beginning of the tournament- he ended up with 1800. One weird thing: in the USCF crosstable, Wesley So appears to come in 7th with 6 points. The listed winner is Sergei Azarov with 6.5. What gives?

It was a strange ending with plays offs. There was a playoff on Sunday to see who got to the final championship playoff on "Millionaire Monday" so that's why the USCF page looks the way it does.
