Thanks for the review/preview!

I agree that having to go through the chess course is annoying. Everyone has a different definition of beginner, and it should be up to people to decide what they want to do with the program.

Sounds like they've included a lot of stuff for serious chess players (like the database and the academy). Also, I think if I was introducing someone to chess, I'd give them chessmaster.

Looks like they have a lot of stuff in the academy! A player like myself, who hasn't used earlier versions, would have a lot of stuff to review.

The personalities seem pretty cool.

Anyways, thanks for the video :) Let us know how the Fritz-ChessMaster match goes!

I totally agree that for someone that is a beginner then Chessmaster is superior to Fritz.

The academy is great and I really like the practise stuff (which is much like the practise that this site offers). And Josh just seems to be a great guy and does a very good job teaching chess.

Anyway the first game is under way and I set it for 2 hours each. What I can say this early in the match (only 14 moves total played) is that Chessmaster is way quicker than Fritz (16 min vs 7 min sofar (With Fritz as white!)).

This is the position at this time (for those that are curious). I will post the complete pgn later on.

Chess board: r1bqkb1r/1p2nppp/p1n1p3/1B1pP3/3Q4/5N2/PPP2PPP/RNB2RK1 w kq - 0 8

At the 15. move

Chess board: r2qk3/1p1bbp2/p1n1p1p1/3pP2r/6Qp/N1P2N1P/PP3PP1/R1B1R1K1 b q - 0 15

And a few moves later:

Chess board: 2r1k3/1p2bp2/p5p1/3qPp2/b1p4p/5P1P/PPNB2P1/1R2Q1K1 w - - 0 25

I really like Chessmasters play sofar (it is up a pawn).

at move 34.

Chess board: 2r5/2k2pQ1/p5p1/1p2Pp2/b2R4/P4P1P/q5P1/7K w - - 0 34

Fritz dropped a bishop earlier and now it looks like chessmaster is winning if fritz does not find a perpetual or something. The e-pawn however is dangerous.

I think fritz is going to line up the rook and queen on the sixth rank. Let us see how it goes..=) Still a long way to go.

Yeah I think it was because of Fritz opening play, which was not good at all in my opinion. I will have to look at that.

Did the engines use book in this game?
The opening stage was really weird, early Bb5 in these lines can't work for white.. so after that I thought it was at least equal. But then black did some weird stuff too, with h5-h4-Rh5!?
Ah, these computers.. :)

Ack..I checked it earlier and Fritz did not use book in this game so no wonder it took longer time in the opening and no wonder it looked strange. I will have to play it all over again.

oh well...atleast the ending is quite instructive.

bah
