for those who want the solution:
Hidden Text Below - [Show it] - [Hide it Again]
...well, I don't know, but i think its....
1. Rxe6+
a) 1...fxe6 2.Qh4#
b) 1...Qe7 2.Nxd6+ Kd8 3.Nxb7+ Kc7 4.Rxe7 Bxe7.....
c) 1...Be7 2.Nxd6+ Kf8 3.Bh6+ Kg8 4.Qg4+ Bg5 5.Re8+ Nf8 (Qxe8 6.Qxg5#) 6. Rxf8+ Qxf8 7.Qxg5+ Qg7 8. Qxg7#
given the length of the third variation, chances are I went wrong somewhere.

Blackadder, you got it. White is just winning in all variations after the first move.

Yeah, the first move wasn't that hard to spot, and the rest is just mop-up depending on whether Black chooses a quick mate or massive material loss.
Even if you play the relatively inelegant 2. Rxe7+ (which is the first thing that would pop into a lot of people's heads in a blitz game) in variations (b) and (c), it's hard for White to find a way to not win quickly...

yes, but I'm actually quite pleased with myself because I managed to accuratly calculate all of that in my head.
okay, most of the moves were forced, but it still required you to vizualise the position several moves ahead. which is something I usually fluff up; make a fatal error 3-4 moves in.

Hey Blackadder,
Good job! I often muff that sort of thing too. The caveman approach has it's practical appeal...
