Very enjoyable, thanks Katar! I look forward to your main-line Berlin.

And it was indeed a treat! :D You definitely show some better ways of handling the e-file caveman stuff that I was seeing way back when. Good job! I'm looking forward to the next one... :D

A blitz game in a Berlin sideline where White gets a bit greedy grabbing pawns:

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 Nf6 4. d3 Bc5 5. c3 O-O 6. Bxc6 bxc6 7. Nxe5 d5 8.
Nxc6 Qd6 9. exd5 Re8+ 10. Kf1 Qxd5 11. Nb4 Bxb4 12. cxb4 Bb7 13. f3 Ba6 14. h3
Qd4 15. g4 Bxd3+ 16. Kg2 Re2+ 17. Kg3 Qf2+ 18. Kf4 Nd5+ 19. Kg5 Re5# 0-1

Thanks for that Slachterman. It always amazes me the number of ways black can fight back in the RL when white takes the e5 pawn.

That was indeed pretty good. But you are always left wondering if it really is that easy for black.

Perhaps 8.d4 is ok for white in the replayer game..

Ok, I found all the games:

The first two were played in a tournament this year - April 2010. Time control was 2 hours /40 moves and 30 min/rest. First round against a guy rated 1945 (german rating; ELO 1989):

1-0. 20..h5 was the first inaccuracy, I think (20..b6 is probably better). After that, it's all downhill. The second inaccuracy (or maybe mistake) was probably 24...Nf5 leaving me with a bad bishop against the good knight. Note that I was already in serious time trouble here. That's also the reason, why I hung a pawn with 30...Bd7. After something like 30...Rc8 I'm still worse, but not losing yet. Anyway: The opening was no problem for Black at all, he was totally fine the whole time.

-----------

Second game was in the same tournament, round 5. The guy was rated 1896 (about the same ELO), ergo another tough one:

1/2:1/2. No problems for Black, he offered the draw.

-----------

Third game was played in May 2010. Opponent's rating: 1847 (ELO: 1908). Same time control (2h/40 + 30min/rest).

1/2:1/2. So, this was the first time that someone played Bxc6 (the same system that katar's opponent played in his recent video). Unfortunately I had no idea what to play against it, but I saw that the ending is probably a draw, so I brought the bishop to the kingside (defends everything) and exchanged rooks. He was the one that offered the draw btw. After the game, I looked up some master games and discovered the plan that katar employed - f6, Re8, Bf8 and I love it. I'm looking forward to playing it in the future.

to my novice eyes it's seam when facing the berlin with these lines, two things pop out. White is always taking an unprotected pawn, or placing a knight on the an very weakly supported outpost too soon.

white appears to be making moves with Tempo but lose some advantage(I lack the proper chess vocabulary) allowing black to use some good tactics.

does that seam like a good assessment of the lines shown above?

Dewetha, my general take on the Berlin is that White usually gives up his best piece (light-square bishop) with hopes of inconveniencing Black.

In the queenswap mainline the inconvenience is that Black's king discoordinates the rooks.

In the Re1 sideline White has a space advantage and temporary knight outpost on e5. Black's plan of Re8, Bf8, f6 takes away the knight outpost and allows Black to untangle.

Some white players approach the whole thing differently and play 4.d3 with a sort of Giuoco Pianissimo buildup, playing for a central pawn mass (eventual d3-d4) rather than piece activity.

My choice of the Berlin assumes that a draw is usually OK. This is b/c i have a lot of respect for the Ruy Lopez and for people who play it, who i would think would be stronger players than most of my opposition.

Katar - out of curiosity, what do you play when you need a win as black (i.e. you're higher rated by 400 points, etc.). If I can get white to go into the mainline endgame, great, I think black has fine winning chances. But a lot of these sidelines just seem so dry to me. One of the reasons I don't play the Berlin...
