Nice show!
Have also a little question. Was my game really so bad or dull?
Just want to know it for myself. Thanks a lot again for this show! Learned really a lot!

Re: Dennis Monokroussos - Viewer Games June 2010 [59:08]
Thanks for the anlaysis Dennis. It's so ironic that what I thought was my best timed move of the game - f4 - was actually the move which could have lost me the game, had it been punished! Still, this is why it's great to get analysis. You mention that it's a well played game for a 1200. My blitz rating hovers around the mid 1200s normally, whereas my rapid/standard is around 1700. Am I just imagining things or is that an unusually large difference? It's probably down to the fact that I take standard more seriously, and don't play at four in the morning, or drunk I also completely agree with what you say about not always looking for the opponents best moves. It's actually why I'm AWFUL at correspondance chess. I get so involved with a line from move two or three in, that I forget to really double check if it can be refuted at move one. Many a time I've looked at a position for half an hour, posted it to a friend, and then realise that it's an obvious blunder because I missed that a piece was hanging at the very start of the line... My in-game analysis, strangely enough, is far more accurate than when I'm given the time and freedom to move the pieces around and really look more in depth... It's something I really have to learn. Thanks again, it's really great what you're doing here, and I really enjoyed my month of premium membership, going through the archives of all your past vids.

For me there is usually around a 200 point difference between standard and blitz. I would use blitz to measure strength, because 1700 on FICS is like terribly easy to beat

Re: Dennis Monokroussos - Viewer Games June 2010 [59:08]
Yes I find the standard ratings on FICS pretty inflated. I'm 1700 there myself, and I'm quite sure I'm not a Class B player But I also would guess that my FIDE standard rating would be slightly higher than 1200. I guess the only way to find out is to actually take part in a FIDE tournament, but at the moment I have neither the time nor money for that.

There's about a 200-point difference in the average ratings in blitz and standard on FICS. The standard ratings are quite inflated, I'm over 1800 there recently and my Irish rating is just over 1500!

Good video, the miniature in the Scotch was very cool . But of course your comments were very enlightening. Btw, I also got a huge gap between my blitz and my standart rating in FICS. My all-time best Blitz rating was ~1700, whereas my best Standart rating is about ~2000. And I do believe that I could improve my Standart rating by about 100 points if I didn't listen to music during every game and if I actually focused more on the game .

I think the difference in blitz and standard ratings on FICS is more like 400 points for the average player.

krumow: No, not at all. Your Exchange Slav game wasn't dull. Is the Exchange Slav ever dull? I mean, really? Zzzzzzzzz.
Just kidding! Honestly, it was simply an oversight on my part. I'll cover it next time. One quick thought though, for you and others: if it's really one part of the game you're especially interested in, it might be more suited to the viewer questions thread. On the other hand, the two threads sometimes blur a bit, so don't worry about it.

Thank you for the answer! Didn't mean to be impolite. And, well, I think if the game (not only my own) is really dull and uninteresting (without any educational value) you shouldn't waste your time covering it. There are plenty of other good games and stuff you can show us.
Thanks again for what you are doing here! It is really great!

Re: Dennis Monokroussos - Viewer Games June 2010 [59:08]
Hi dennis, I just checked www.chesslive.de in chessbase and the move 6....Nh5 has been played a couple of times before with some horrible results for black. The oldest game is from 1949, Sandrin-Schmidt, US open Omaha, 1-0. The move is yet to be played by a GM. The higest rated had 2030. Just saying. Thanks for your videos and this series. (Yes, I know this is a bit of a Besserwisser kind of a comment!) Bayes

Re: Dennis Monokroussos - Viewer Games June 2010 [59:08]
Thanks for the great analysis Dennis! I liked how it covered the opening and middlegame - a friend and I analyzed Nh5 after the game and found that with accurate play, Black appears to have reasonable chances.
During post-mortem I had trouble finding the strategic "landmarks" after Nf4 O-O-O, what pawns each player should or shouldn't push, what pieces to trade, etc. I found your suggestions insightful as I don't have much experience playing semi-open positions.
(Ha! I only saw Bh6+ Kb1 Re8 Qd4 during the game while looking for ways to regain material with tempo. That's amazing how moving Bg7-h6 and Rf8-e8 not only makes Be3 possible but also doesn't give the White queen an escape square at f6.)
