Phew, finally won a game! :bom: HOnestly though i was just trying to equalize and steer the game toward a symmetrical drawish position...
I actually calculated OK for the most part. I thought that 23.Rxc6! was the best move, but I also thought my rather conservative opponent wouldn't go for it. I'm happy with my choice of 26...Rae8 intending f7-f5-f4. Strange ending to this game.

Hi Katar

Been following the journal, don't remember ever having posted something.

Nice game. I'm not sure all the early exchanges in the center were necessary. Having a bishop against a knight definitely favored you. Neat little tactical shot at the end.

Good luck on the job!

Had any time for studying recently? How do you exactly study nowadays?

Not much time for studying lately. After my Round 2 loss i installed tactics puzzles on my Android phone (the "Mobialia" app) and i try to solve those for a few minutes each day. That's kinda all i have time for right now, and it's super-convenient since i always have my phone with me. Also, once a week I do group-analysis of OTB games with some friends after the club games.

I've noticed over the years that studying consistently is just as important as the amount of time you spent overall. So it might not be such a bad thing.
You seem to have improved somewhat. Not too long ago you were a class A player if I remember correctly.

I should take a look at that chess app. All I could find were these boring ass mate in 2s.

Sorry, I know this is a bit late. In your Rd.1 game. After 8.Bf4!! black is strategically busted. Bit surprised to be the first to point this out :)

Pobble you are late. ;)
I am a 1.d4 NOOB but i have no idea how Black can be "strategically busted" at that stage. maybe u could elaborate? What is White's big idea?

Got to the club 10 mins late, again. So another time-handicap to my opponent. Got hit with an opening i havent looked at in probably 12 months for White. I took some time to convince myself that Bxf6 must be the right move, then i vaguely remembered there is a line where White's queen goes to f3 to fight Black's doubled f-pawns. Kind of a wimpy draw by repetition/agreement in the end. He's a strong player though and trains like a madman. "I expect to be at least 2250 within a year," he said.

I strongly considered 16.Na4 intending either 15...b6 16.c4 or otherwise 16.Nc5. But i just repeated moves instead. White always risks the position opening up and getting shredded by the 2 bishops. So a draw is not too bad.

I was going say work it out yourself! There are great benefits to this approach. But as your just a 1.d4 fledgling. After Bf4 we have the Botvinnik system against the Petrosian move order. 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Be7! You can see many elite games played in this. Black has created a target by pushing a pawn in front his king, you can be thinking about 0-0-0 maybe, certainly pushing everything from e-h file. But this is not blacks problem as this plan is pretty normal. Blacks problem is what he ' cannot ' do himself. The normal Bc8 -Bf5 ( even Bg4-Bh5-Bg6 is not possible ) is off the cards and Nd7-Nf8-Ng6 is gone. Black does have c7-c5 in one go but you can just ignore it ( on c5-c4 you 0-0 like in the Nimzo). The trick is to compare games. Yes black can still fight, but he cannot sit back as an option now.

Wanted to call the TD and cancel, again.
Showed up anyway to try to make a draw, again.
Blundered into 2-move checkmate, again. Haha. At this point i'm just over it.

One more game and then a hiatus from all chess. 8)

Post Re: Katar's Komments
(Hi Sarciness!) Obviously I haven't been updating here. I quit all chess for most of 2012 -- i didn't even visit CV.tv or play any blitz games.

My only chess goal for 2013 was to finish the Spielmann series. Which was done in April.

So a new goal is to finish studying Chernev's book on Capablanca's Best Chess Endings with my friend who is around 1950 USCF. We have already done 24/60 games. My friend is more motivated to improve his game than I am, but I enjoy his company and it's a book I would like to finish at some point. I have considered doing an endgame video series (a short one) based on Capablanca's book Chess Fundamentals.

I've also been trying to watch lectures at the STLChessclub youtube channel. They are quite good but also kinda long and sometimes i fall asleep. I don't think I will play a rated game in the foreseeable future so I am just taking it easy chess-wise, looking at endgame stuff off and on. I do not attend the local chess club any more but I've heard it is getting stronger -- now 3 or 4 USCF Masters plus 10-12 experts play there regularly. So i'd obviously have to sharpen my calculation before joining a tournament there.

The Capablanca endgame video series sounds like a winner- I hope you do it. I never did read Chess Fundamentals though I think I've got a copy around here someplace- I would love to know what I've missed.

Glad to hear you're enjoying life, even if you're only dipping your toes into chess. I keep meaning to make more videos but never seem to get round to it!
