I played online, just once. This guy CLAIMED he was around 1700, and he's making VERY STRONG moves.
I knew he was using a computer, when I turned on my Fritz 12, & the program played the same,
Greg

It's not hard to spot this when your opponent is able to quickly (within a few seconds, if not simply 1 second or less) expose you for your material weakness, almost effortlessly capturing your pieces for what seems to be primarily to gain material points, but doesn't quite develop the positions of their pieces; the very same way chess computers play.

I once dualed two rounds with a 900 rating player as a 1100 player myself on yahoo chess, and damn, did that guy play almost like a 1600 player. I was very impressed for a minute as to how good he was for a weaker player. And then, suspicion soon rose: I noted how almost every other move, if not every move, he was able to capture a pawn or a minor peace of mine within a few seconds; it was like a computer being able to see all moves and calculate for the best material wins within a fraction of a second. I would know, since I myself grew up with BATTLE CHESS.

Not to mention that he very quickly seemed to demand playing white. It should be noted that certain programs like Battle Chess is better to play as white, since you can't turn the board around to be in the position of black. hmmmmmm

I guess a good question to ask now is, is there a way to spot these online fako's before you play them?

If you want to play correspondence chess chess.com is the best imo. It is free, has a very lively community and have a great service. The premium memberships are also worth checking out. A lot of people on CV.TV play there and have a community set up there.
