Haha I don't know what I was doing in this game! I miscounted, and thought I was material down :D I didn't see a way to bring the attack forward and thought I was behind for some reason (I think the second game sent me a bit strange in the head! :D )

Thanks for the match, it was really fun. I'll try to upload my commentary as soon as I get this software.

Amongst other things, I overlooked Rxh2 which seems like a good idea and of course, I was wrong when I said that the pawn was pinned by my rook. I actually knew this, but somehow I didn't see it at that moment  . This is the first time I've played this line in 10 years though I used to get it all the time.

The game I referred to was Browne-Miles, Tilburg 1978 and I had forgotten that it was from the English Defense (a closely related opening) but most of the ideas are very similar i.e 9.Ne2! is very scary for Black in either case.

The f5-move is easily refuted with 9. Nf3. The next moves are all forced, so it's a good calculation exercise. These Bb7-f5 ideas basically never work, the Matovinsky Gambit that can arise in Owen's Defence died decades ago. Although I admit it's a bit overwhelming the first time you see it.

If Black fianchettoes the Queen's Bishop, I feel like White can opt for two different plans: Either building a solid centre with c3, putting all the pieces on the best squares (rooks on e and d, Queen on e2, Nd2-f1-g3, Bf4 maybe) and then breaking through in the centre - although to me it seems that this works better, if Black goes for a more conservative b6 (then White has more time until Black gets going on the Queenside), or instead, against a6-b5, going for active play with 3. Nf3, 0-0, xc5 and an undermining a4, which should leave a weakness on b5 (and if it pushes, the light squares are compromised). This is all rather abstract, I understand. The early deviation never sleeps.

Btw, looking forward to the other half of the commentary(/ies)!

Yeah, I knew this line was pretty much busted when I played it, but I remembered winning lots of games in it too, as most White players haven't seen it before. Like 50% of my repertoire, this relies heavily on bluff.
