A problem inside a problem, nice. Again, I get half credit, didn't get the first part. I did manage to figure out the second part probably because the key move there is something I typically play OTB but this time it just happened to work!

Nice find on this one.

Did you find the queen move? I sure didn't and was flabbergasted when I saw the solution.

Yep, like the only idea in the position to push the pawns forward, the mating net was pretty clear.

The problem was really cool. I often tell two part jokes, "I told you that to tell you this", sort of my thing according to others, so this problem has a special place for me. Going to implement it for a few drinks I am sure.

LOL, well you're a better man than I, Gunga Din. I figured it had to be a queen move but my brain refused to consider that *that* was the move- I guess it's the Sherlock Holmes adage, "when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth."

First part stumped me completely, but the Queen move I saw instantly due to a middlegame motif I was reminded of. Imagine a Queen giving check on c1 (King on g1/h1) and after Kh2 Qf4+ Kh1/Kg1 it'd be a draw by perpetual (if g3 Qxf2+ etc.), but if White can throw in a piece on d1 or e1, the Queen captures and has no longer access to the dark squares. Probably was a 'Puzzle of the day' at some point.

Pattern recognition strikes again!

A beauty!

I'd like to know if anyone will ever happen across this video by randomly searching for the 'hc' tag.
Somehow I really hope so =)
