 Re: gooeyjim's training journal
ty... unfortunately after this game I played the worst move in several years!!!
Image

Here I'm rated 2106 and then I play like the worst move in history!!! This is a find the worst move puzzle. I'm white, with a fat 3 pawn advantage. There are many ways to win this position, like Nf3 Qxb2 0-0 Qxc3 Rfc1 and white has a extra pawn and the iniatitve, but I played 0-0-0??? and overlooked Qxb2#
I was so mad this ruined the rest of my day

 Re: gooeyjim's training journal
Actually, after 1. Nf3 Qxb2 2. Rb1 wins the Black rook on b8... You don't have to give up two pawns to castle safely. Maybe you were just having a really bad day, because aside from missing the tactical flaw of playing 1. O-O-O Qxb2#, from a strategic point of view the position really required castling kingside ASAP. Something like 1. Ngf3 Rg6 2. b3 (or 2. c4 Qxb2 3. O-O) Bb7 3. Qe2 Qc6 4. Nc4 (or 4. O-O Qxc3 5. Rfc1 Qb4, etc.) Ra6 5. O-O -- and then with your king (relatively) safe your 2-3 extra pawns will tell. It seems like you just lost the thread all the way around. It happens to GMs occasionally -- and to the rest of us more often than we'd like to admit...

Instead of it ruining your day, you might be happier learning to laugh this sort of thing off after the initial shock and irritation. Chess is a game. It's supposed to be fun and make you happy; not ruin your day.

um... Rb1 doesn't win the b8 rook. Rb1?! Qxc3 Rxb8?? Qc1+ Kd2 Ba6+ -+

Well the important thing is that white was completely winning and i blew it

My rating continues to skyrocket, after about 800 games around 2020 strength.

Playing quite decently, favourite game of the day: Knight sac to win. Nothing too impressive though.

Although my rating hasn't been great (floating around 2060 nowadays)
I feel like I've been playing good positional chess. Here are a couple of examples:

(I'm having some problems with the game replayer, thats why it says 1-0 here, it 0-1)

Wow. 21st on FICS! Just 5 more points and when you search hbest I'll be on there! I've been playing quite well lately, and I really hope to be on the best list soon :D
It's like the FICS ratings have suddenly gotten overinflated, or I'm really playing better. Who knows, maybe I'll be able to break the 2200 barrier soon!
For once, I actually feel that I am master strength :)

 Re: gooeyjim's training journal
I'm having a terrible day today. I'm losing a lot, and here is my worst loss.
What's upsetting is not only the loss to a weak 1900, but the fact that this 1900 doesn't even comprehend basic development chess, and I still lost. I almost feel like quitting chess because this loss is so disgusting.

It started out ok, like I was really going to punish him for not developing. Then all of a sudden I played Re1+? and blundered my pressure off, then Qf3?? and I had a losing position.

 Re: gooeyjim's training journal
I've been playing in a tournament, and my play is quite shabby. :(
So far 3 points out of 4 in the U2000 section...
Played 3 bad games, all with blunders. I managed to swindle 1 into victory and the other two I held draws... Anyway, here's an interesting game

Here I got a big opening advantage and missed the chance to get a big advantage on move 20 (Qa5! a3 Qa4! instead of Qc6). Also, my opponent returned the favor when I played exf4 and then he should play Bxf4 Qd5 Nc4!! (threatening Nb6# and Nd6+)

 Re: gooeyjim's training journal
I've finished the tournament and only got 2nd place :(
Oh well, I've been playing quite nicely in the end.
I'm especially proud of this game, where I played excellent positional chess to bring a victory in the last round. Even though my opponent made it easy by playing Ra8??, he had a pretty awful position before that.

 Re: gooeyjim's training journal
I've been kind of lazy in updating my progress anymore...
I've had ups and downs and now I think I'm getting myself out of my latest bad streak.
Anyway, a few weeks ago I had an invitation to join teamleague, in which my team is RockOn. My teamleague games are the ones I take most seriously and long games really help me test my skill. (I wouldn't have the patience to play long games otherwise!)
Anyway its been kind of interesting in the TL, my score is +1 =2 -1. Normally this would upset me but I am in the open section and there is heavy competition. Everyone plays so well and it is extremely difficult to win. And since my team has the lowest average ratings, I am usually playing tougher opponents and I am sastified with my results. My average opponent ELO is 2150, so overall I think I am doing quite well.

Here is today's teamleague game:

Didn't play so great, I think he missed a few chances to squeeze, then a draw happened. Really hard to win as black with my openings :(
