 Gentle's Gym
This will be sort of a megapost and data dump. Just getting a rough overview over the different systems and interesting setup lines. As I tend to lose my .pgn files and notes in the unknown spaces of my HD I'll just put them here and hopefully update stuff as I go through annotated games and stuff^^
Probably, I should put this into the statpost..well, we'll see.

 Re: Gentle's Gym
No tactics today but I blitzed a bit and....well...Hollywood Finish. I won with 0:00.1 left on the clock
After I promoted I had about 1+ second left iirc...so from move 58 to finish I had to premove. Man, my heart is still pounding but....I feel good *g*

Image

The easy way would have been the mate in 3 oO (blame it on the boogie...erm...premove):
58. ... g1=Q
Image

1.Kh5 Qg7
2.Kh4 forced Qg6
3.Kh3 forced Qg3#

so, I guess I unconsciously willingly changed that easy win to that dramatic mate in 13

The complete game:

oha !
22. ... Re1+ wins the Queen
23. ... Re1+ still wins the Queen, he is really asking for it
40. ... Qd1+ wins the Knight
man, I hate blitz games...it takes me 1 click-through to see it, but during the game...never!

 Re: Gentle's Gym
Tournament starts tomorrow, so today I won't do serious chess stuff. If the weather gets better I will go for a nice long walk and later browse through random chess books a bit. Ah well, maybe I take a closer look at Grünfeld stuff. I have some serious deficiencies in some lines and especially in the Grünfeld that can prove fatal.

 Re: Gentle's Gym
Last update has been a while :)
Tournament went well ( opponents average rating was sth around 2000 considering 9 rounds, so 19xx) and meanwhile our season started.

I have slightly changed my opening repertoire since then. Playing Grünfeld only against 1.c4 atm and switched to 1...d5 (heading for a semi-slav) after 1.d4. Feel comfortable with that.
My tactics rating is approaching 2000 (19xx atm) - I probably shouldn't say this because the game proves the contrary =P
Also decided to not Blitz with fewer time than 10min+0 ...or rarely^^

Ok, so season game 1 was rather dull. It was a "must win" for our team and so it happened. My opponent was 1784 rating and the game ended in a not fought out draw. I assume that we all just have to become accustomed again to playing on Sunday morning *yawn*

1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 dxe4 4. Nxe4 Bf5 5. Ng3 Bg6
6. h4 h6 7. Nf3 Nd7

(7... e6 8. Ne5 Bh7 9. Qh5 Qc7 gives white active play.)

8. h5 Bh7 9. Bd3 Bxd3 10. Qxd3 Ngf6
Mainline theory is 10...e6 to free the bishop and prevent Nf5 but it doesn't matter.
(10... e6 11. Ne4 Ngf6 12. Nxf6+ Nxf6 is what I dislike. I prefer to have the N on d7 to make Ne5 less attractive for white.)

11. c4
(11. Nf5 e6 12. Ne3 Bb4+ 13. c3 Bd6 14. Nc4 is equal -0.15)

11... e6 12. Bd2
(Bf4 Qa5+ 13. Bd2 Qc7 transposes to the game. 13.c3 is awkward for white because 0-0-0 is prevented.)

12...Qc7 13. Qe2 O-O-O equal 0.00
(13... Bd6 14. Ne4 Nxe4 15. Qxe4 Nf6 16. Qe2 doesn't really make a difference. equal -0.2)

14. Bc3 Bd6 15. Ne5 Rhf8 16.O-O-O c5 17. Nxd7 Rxd7 18. dxc5 Bf4+
a mistake. I didn't want to part with the bishop by playing Bxg3 because I thought that after Bxf6 both have weak pawn on an open file. So I prefered to stick with the bishop missing the
variation.
(18... Bxg3 19. Bxf6 what I was scared of. But it doesnt work because of Bf4+ 20. Kb1 gxf6
a very simple tactic. Need to go to bed earlier when having a game on Sunday.)

19. Kb1 Rxd1+ 20. Rxd1 Qxc5 21. Bxf6 combined with a draw offer which I
accepted. My team was already leading and I felt uncomfortable in the position.

(21...gxf6 22. Ne4 is obviously good for white +0.7)

1/2-1/2

We played it through afterwards and it seems that the endgame is still ok. Draw was ok, though he was weaker in the endgame than me as it turned out, but anyway..draw is fine.

To sum it up: We played some theory and before the game really started we agreed to draw. I missed a nice transposition and he missed to play on :)

Phew..had the League Match today and it was a pretty tough. Ironically he posed severe problems to me (black) in a Caro-Kann sideline (3.f3)....managed a draw but it was a tough fight.
Will probably post a game analysis of that later.

I envy you for being able to play in a league. It's so much fun, but I moved to a different city for uni and can't play with my old team now.

Oh yea, that sucks...I feel with you. I am lucky in that respect. I can play up to 11 league games a season if I want and there also is an annual Fide Tourney in my city (Magnus Carlsen played there once too. Was able to watch him live and in person^^)

Where did you move to, btw ?

From Augsburg to Regensburg. Maybe I can talk to the team captain so that I can at least play some games. The problem is he'll probably want someone who can always play.

 Re: Gentle's Gym
I wouldnt be that pessimistic...usually chess clubs suffer some sort of player shortage - at least the smaller ones. Not quite sure if this applies to yours.

Regensburg...uff... thats far away (at least from my northern point of view).
Any tourneys there ? I mean the league matches are -at least for me- only practice games where I try out stuff in a long game - which admittedly is a very nice opportunity to have- but I mainly focus on tournaments and try to attend a minimum of 2 a year.

 Re: Gentle's Gym
I'll have to look into tourneys, but I don't think there are any big ones. In Augsburg there is one and Munich probably offers something.

I forgot: my club is quite big. We even have Mikhail Umansky on the first team 8) .

 Re: Gentle's Gym
Oki...my annual update

What has happened ?

-Finished the season with 50%....which is 4 / 8 points (one loss) in our first team...I am satisfied with that as I only had black. Yes, 8 of 8 games I had black. Rating average should be sth like 1700..maybe a bit lower. Range was from 1500 -1900.
-I also played twice in our 2nd team and scored 2/2...ok, not much to say about that as my best opponent there was end 1400ish I think.
-Will play for 3rd place in our club championship and had the highlight of beating a 2000 guy :)

Next up is a tourney in August, which I feel I might do quite well. Time to get some ELO's ^^

On my chess development:
I am getting confident in the openings and positions I played. I blitzed a lot in the last few months and even though I dont take that serious I feel that just the simple repitions of positions just makes me feel "cool" in the games
At the moment I am struggling a bit to get full points (which might be because I only had black this season) but anyway...I dont feel that my openings, or at least the Caro-Kann, offer me a good oppurtunity to play for a full point.
Not quite sure what to do about this but as my "order" for the next season is "You play 2 boards higher and we expect you not to lose" winning seems to be a long term goal anyway =P
I decided to switch back to Grunfeld. Dealing with the SemiSlav was cool and I think netted me some new ideas but I like the flexibility in the Grunfeld more. It gives me more headaches though but this is also true for my opponents - also thinking if KingsIndian might be nice..but we'll see.
I am still very pleased with the exchange Ruy and I feel this is my strongest opening atm, where I really could take on 2000 guys and make them suffer.
Still having nightmares when thinking about French and Scandinavian...well, actually, Scandinavian isnt that scary but French is justa total "no-go" and I just decided to play the exchange at least for a while just out of spite
I also improved significantly on tactics. Need to continue my endgame studies though as in the tourney I will need them...I really love to grind tourney games and test my opponents stamina..so that means: endgames to the kings!"

 Re: Gentle's Gym
If I were you and was about to learn an opening against d4 it wouldn't be the Grunfeld. Its interesting and fun but really difficult and you really have to know the specific positions. The only reason that I don't give it up is that I have already invested too much time in it. Grunfeld is really an opening which you will never learn fully but at the same time you can take comfort in that your opponent won't either.
