 What will be the outcome?
BLACK TO PLAY
Grandmaster Larry Evans (1932-2010) won 4 US and 4 US Open Titles and eidted MCO 10th Edition. He was also a prolific writer of more than 20 books and a regular columnist in several leading magazines. He was also second to Bobby Fisher in Candidates matches, helping him in two 6-0 sweeps leading to the World Champion title match (1972) with Boris Spasky. Here is one problem (I believe) he threw open to his readers in a weekly. After a week, there was consensus about White’s win. The next week, a reader pointed out brilliant defense for Black. The next week another reader pointed out a twist in the ending which ultimately leads to….

This is a very famous study. Is it really from Evans?

It was a long time ago I saw this problem in a weekly. In those times there were no computers and one strong player used to play against the collective wisdom of the crowds. I believe it was Grandmaster Larry Evans chess column where I saw it. Rest all the information I gave was correct.

This is a very famous study by Saavedra.

I'm sure it was featured in one of the Evans columns (probably in Chess Life?), but it was composed around the turn of the century, so long before Evans...

Andrew is correct- in fact Josh did a nice video on this sometime back: Saveedra Position Video

Also, the story you tell sounds more like the original story where the study was published (and thought to be a draw)- readers were asked what they thought and Rev. Saveedra ( from my hometown of Glasgow :) ) sent in his shocking (and historic) solution. So I'm not sure the Evans anecdote is 100% accurate. You can read more here: Wiki's article on the Saveedra position

<edit> I see now that I put the same Wiki link as Andrew- courtesy of the Department of Redundancy Department.

I am grateful for the history of the problem. Just brought old memories back. But there was no way that I could have read 'Weekly Citizen'. It could be GM Larry Evans retold the same anecdote in his column.
