Best of the Week #3

Lots of excitement this week, including tournament recaps, new live commentaries, in-depth journal entries, and a heated discussion of an offbeat opening. Once again, let us know what you think of the series and post suggestions for next week's roundup.

In the discussion forum, King_Greco posted a line from the Greco Counter Gambit that many members dismissed as dubious. Although the discussion was initially tense, King_Greco pointed out the gulf between the theoretical evaluation of an opening and its practical chances. Best of all, JWhis decided to take up the challenge of playing against the Greco Counter Gambit! A series of games (live commentary we hope!) is forthcoming.

Still on the topic of openings, evan7284 made a post asking for advice on what to play against 1.d4. Several members made thoughtful suggestions, ranging from aggressive options like the Albin Counter Gambit to more conservative options like the Queen's Gambit Declined. Join the discussion and let us know what you play against 1.d4!

There's been even more discussion in the already featured Playing Against Stronger Players thread. Kamus and sfarmer29 wrote detailed posts about their thoughts on players of various rating levels.

In the training journals forum, Hitchhiker has posted some excellent analysis of recent games. Kamus and Gentlewhisper provided their thoughts and sparked a brief discussion of Jonathan Rowson's Chess for Zebras.

In the video forums, there were a flurry of great videos, but I'd like to recognize those by Calm and JWhis in particular. JWhis posted two videos on the Mountaineer open. The second video is especially nifty because it features a reply from JWhis' opponent! Finally, Calm has started posting live commentaries. These are great because Calm is a strong player with a flair for live commentary. Check out commentaries six and seven. In the latter, he plays an International Master.
